New Elgin Middle School
The Work
BERGER is laying the groundwork for a brand-new middle school in Elgin. The project includes mass excavation, constructing the building pad, digging multiple ponds, installing a 570-piece underground storm trap, and completing the site utility package of storm sewer, sanitary, and water main systems.
With nearly 50,000 tons of stone and 80,000 cubic yards of dirt moved—and thousands of feet of underground pipe installed—BERGER’s work is the foundation for a school that will serve the community for generations.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge: a 570-piece storm trap that had to be set beneath the school’s parking lot and fully backfilled before the weather turned. This massive underground system required precision planning, constant coordination, and tight execution alongside other subcontractors working in the same space.
And while BERGER started later than expected, the team’s momentum and communication quickly propelled the project ahead of schedule.
The Result
Thanks to seamless collaboration with Gilbane and other subs, BERGER’s crews have kept the site running smoothly and efficiently. The building pad, utilities, and storm trap installation have all advanced on schedule, setting the stage for vertical construction.
This project highlights the BERGER difference: crews who adapt quickly, communicate constantly, and perform at scale. Always at the Ready isn’t just a tagline—it’s how a school like this gets built.
