Bernard Drive Roadway Reconstruction

The Work
BERGER is leading the reconstruction of Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove on behalf of the Illinois Department of Transportation. The project includes roadway reconstruction and drainage improvements across a 0.9-mile stretch, requiring high-volume underground utility work and the replacement of a major culvert at White Pine Ditch.
To maintain the aggressive timeline, multiple BERGER sewer crews worked simultaneously to install storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main systems, all while preserving local access and flow of creek water.
The Challenge
The project kicked off with Stage 1: a 45-calendar-day full road closure to remove a deteriorating 66” metal culvert and install an 8’x6’ precast concrete box culvert—all while keeping creek flow uninterrupted.
At the same time, three BERGER utility crews were working in close proximity—coordinating the safe, efficient installation of multiple underground systems.
Add in the tight site—a two-lane residential roadway near homes and schools—and the stakes were high. With penalties on the line for missing the culvert deadline, every hour mattered.

The Result
As the first stage nears completion, BERGER is on track to deliver the culvert crossing within the contracted 45-day window. That success is a credit to the team’s tight coordination, responsiveness, and deep bench of experienced utility crews.
Working in a high-demand municipality like Buffalo Grove is never easy—but BERGER’s record of performance, professionalism, and partnership continues to speak volumes.
This is what it looks like to be Always at the Ready.
